Default Myths in films--the heroe's journey.

In ancient times, tales of mythological heroes served as models for success. Usually the hero went on a long difficult journey seeking knowledge, riches, peace, justice, acceptance, respect etcetera.

He might have done this voluntarily or else have been forced to do so by the community. After many days and many trials the hero returned with the prize. A more profound understanding of the purpose of life. A bravery he once lacked with which he could benefit both himself and his community. A method with which he would now be able to effect social change.

What are some examples of veritable myths that have taken shape via filmaking and how do they harmonize or deviate from the ancient models described above?

Sounds to me like you've been reading up on Joseph Campbell. How about the Star Wars Trilogy? The Stars Wars Trilogy was chock full of it which, is one reason why it was so popular I think.

Yes, I did take an introductory mytholgy course based on Joseph Cambell's teachings. The star War Trilogy. What I am wondering here is how the hero fulfills his journey and returns with greater knowledge or wisdom. Is it by Luke Skywalker finding Yoda who leads him to the knowledge that he is the son of Darth Vadar?

I seem to be missing something here.

All the insight which is gained through the experience, with all the symbolism it entails, I would say. I would also say it becomes very much like a rites of passage idea.
